An IB maths tutor in Dubai should match four details before quoting: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, SL or HL, the student’s assessment year, and the specific learning gap. “IB experience” alone is not enough. A useful first lesson establishes what the student can explain independently, then builds a focused plan around their actual school course.

This guide is for families choosing private support for Diploma Programme mathematics, usually alongside school. It is not a guide to changing course, buying completed coursework or predicting a grade. For broad lesson-format and price context, start with our Dubai tutoring cost guide; use the checks below to compare subject-specific offers.

AA or AI, SL or HL: what should the tutor actually teach?

The IB offers four DP mathematics courses. Analysis and Approaches (AA) emphasises mathematical reasoning and analytical methods; Applications and Interpretation (AI) gives particular attention to mathematics in context, modelling and technology. Both include substantial mathematics. “AI is just calculator work” and “AA never uses a calculator” are poor descriptions.

Student’s courseEvidence to ask the tutor forWhat the first plan should clarify
AA SLExperience teaching this course and explaining reasoning, not only showing answersWhich foundations or current topics need attention; how independent written working will be checked
AA HLRecent experience with HL content and unfamiliar, multi-step problemsWhether the gap is prerequisite fluency, deeper reasoning or assessment technique
AI SLComfort with contextual problems, statistical interpretation and the student’s approved calculatorHow the student will interpret and explain results rather than copy calculator output
AI HLSpecific AI HL experience, including demanding modelling and technology-supported workWhether both the mathematics and the technology workflow can be taught at the required depth

These are tutor-selection prompts, not a ranking of the courses. Ask the school and prospective universities about course requirements before considering a change. A tutor’s availability should not determine a student’s academic pathway. The IB mathematics overview lists the four courses and links their official subject briefs.

Why the assessment year matters for 2027–2029 families

The IB states that the current mathematics courses have their final assessment in November 2028, with a new curriculum taught from 2027 and first assessed in 2029. Its AA update specifies first teaching in August 2027 and first assessment in May 2029. That transition does not mean a student sitting in 2027 should revise from a “new syllabus” resource intended for 2029.

Give the tutor the school-confirmed assessment session and year. Ask which syllabus and assessment criteria their materials follow. A family relocating to Dubai, repeating a year or changing schools should resolve the cohort with the IB coordinator rather than infer it from the student’s age. Keep the plan aligned with the school’s current teaching sequence; a tutor can repair an earlier gap without replacing the entire school programme.

For the verified transition details, see the official AA curriculum update. Confirm the applicable AI brief separately if that is the student’s course.

A first lesson that gives you useful evidence

Instead of booking a long revision package immediately, agree a short initial review with one clear question: What is stopping this student from completing this type of work independently? Share two or three permitted examples, such as an ordinary homework attempt or a released practice question, with personal details removed.

  1. Let the student explain an attempted solution. The tutor should distinguish a missing concept from an algebra slip, a misread instruction or uncertainty about using technology.
  2. Teach one identified gap. Ask for a worked explanation followed by a different question that the student attempts with less help.
  3. Agree a small follow-up task. Record what will be practised, how it will be reviewed and when you will decide whether the support is helping.

“We covered calculus” is not a useful progress report by itself. A more informative update says which skill was addressed, how much prompting remained and what the student should try next. Progress can be uneven; a paid lesson cannot guarantee a grade or remove the need for independent practice.

Calculator fluency is part of the brief, not a substitute for understanding

Tell the tutor the calculator model approved by the school and examination rules. In the current AA course, the official brief distinguishes a non-technology Paper 1 from technology-permitted papers; the current AI brief states that technology is used in all external assessments. The tutor should therefore practise the right conditions for the student’s course rather than treat every question as a calculator exercise.

At a home lesson, have the student use their own familiar device. Ask them to explain why a numerical result is reasonable and how it relates to the question. Do not buy a new model solely because a tutor prefers it: confirm school guidance and current permitted-device rules first. For online lessons, make sure written workings and the calculator steps can be shared clearly without exposing unrelated files or notifications.

Internal assessment: keep the student’s authorship intact

Support must respect the school’s rules and the IB’s academic-integrity expectations. A safe tutoring brief focuses on understanding mathematics through separate practice. Before discussing an assessed exploration, ask the school what outside support is permitted.

Do not pay a tutor to choose and develop the assessed investigation for the student, create its data, write or rewrite the submitted exploration, or supply a ready-to-submit solution. A promise of a guaranteed IA mark is a reason to stop. The student must retain ownership of the reasoning and final work; private tuition is not an alternative assessment-authoring service.

Compare IB maths lesson quotes on the same basis

Dubai providers advertise home and online tuition, but an available request category does not establish that a particular tutor can teach every IB maths course. Confirm the named tutor, exact course experience, location coverage and recurring appointment before paying. A suitable specialist who can keep the agreed slot may be more useful than a broad “all subjects” package.

Compare thisAsk for it in writingWhy it changes the comparison
Live teaching timeMinutes per lesson, number of lessons and one-to-one or group formatA 45-minute session and a 90-minute session are not equivalent units
Teaching and markingTopics, preparation, practice review and any separately charged feedbackA headline lesson fee may exclude the work you expect between sessions
Home-visit arrangementsArea covered, travel or parking charges, tutor arrival window and rescheduling rulesAfter-school access and travel can affect the practical appointment
Package commitmentTotal payable in AED, tax treatment if applicable, expiry, cancellation and unused-session termsA lower session price can come with a larger non-refundable commitment
ContinuityWho teaches, replacement policy and how the learning notes are handed overA change of tutor can interrupt an otherwise coherent plan

No IB-specific market average is asserted here: course level, specialist fit, session length and included feedback vary too much to compare unqualified headline prices. Divide the full quoted teaching fee by the total live teaching hours only after checking that the scope is comparable; keep extras visible rather than hiding them in an apparently cheap hourly rate.

Send a clear, privacy-conscious request

  • DP year, AA or AI, SL or HL, and school-confirmed assessment session/year.
  • One or two priority topics and the next school checkpoint, without a promised grade outcome.
  • Preferred home area or online format, available time windows and session length.
  • The approved calculator model and whether marked practice feedback is required.
  • A request for subject experience, current permit details where required, written pricing and cancellation terms.

Keep names, school identifiers, candidate numbers, addresses, faces and login details out of shared work samples. Use private booking channels for access information. For a minor, agree a responsible adult’s availability and use an open shared study area. Permission to work, subject qualifications and the family’s safeguarding checks are separate questions; none should be inferred from a profile photograph.

Use IB tutoring in Dubai to describe the exact maths course and compare the scope, price and availability in any responses you receive.

Frequently asked questions

Can a general maths tutor teach IB Maths HL?

Possibly, but general maths experience alone does not establish a match. Ask for experience with the exact AA or AI HL course and assessment cohort, then use a first lesson to assess the explanation and independent follow-up.

Is AI easier than AA?

That is not a reliable way to select a course or tutor. They have different emphases and both are available at SL and HL. The student’s strengths, school guidance and university requirements matter more than a simple easier/harder label.

Do students sitting in 2027 need the 2029 syllabus?

Do not assume so. The IB identifies November 2028 as the final assessment for the current courses and 2029 as the first assessment for the new curriculum. Confirm the student’s actual cohort with the school.

Can the tutor help write the maths IA?

The tutor must not write or rewrite submitted assessed work. Ask the school what outside support is allowed and keep private lessons focused on the student’s own understanding, with separate practice where appropriate.

Is home tutoring better than online IB maths support?

Neither format is automatically better. Home lessons may make paper working easier to observe; online lessons need a reliable way to share working and calculator steps. Compare specialist fit, communication and scheduling before format alone.

Should I book a full term at once?

Check fit through a clearly scoped initial lesson or short block first. Before any larger payment, agree the named tutor, included feedback, package expiry, cancellation and unused-session terms.
