Replacing a bathtub with a walk-in shower is a small renovation, not a sanitaryware swap. The important question is whether your existing bathroom can accommodate a properly drained, waterproofed shower without creating an awkward step, an exposed gap in the tiling, or water escaping into the room.

Quick answer: Dubai advertisements reviewed on 14 October 2026 include a limited tub-area conversion from AED 5,500, a specified package at AED 9,000 plus VAT, and another contractor's conversion band of AED 12,000–25,000. They describe different scopes—not a single comparable market range. Get the drain, floor level, waterproofing extent, glass and material allowances confirmed before comparing totals.
- Walk-in does not automatically mean step-free. A low threshold or tray may be more practical than altering the floor structure.
- Price the finished shower. Removal alone, tiling labour and a glass panel are not equivalent to a complete conversion.
- Keep one coordinating contractor. Agree who is responsible for the interfaces between drainage, waterproofing, tiles and glass.
What does a bathtub-to-shower conversion cost in Dubai?
These indicative public advertisements are starting references, not quotes or transaction averages. Prices can change, and the actual quote depends on the written scope, property, access, materials and inspection.
| Public example | Advertised price | Scope and comparison limit |
|---|---|---|
| Aaashi: tub-area conversion | From AED 5,500 per conversion | Tub removal, wall tiles around the tub, waterproofing, tiling and shower glass. The listing does not settle VAT, fixture allowances, drainage changes or approval fees. |
| BathroomRenovationDubai: standing-shower package | AED 9,000 + 5% VAT per package | Advertised discounted package: tub and tile removal, wall preparation, waterproofing, new tub-area tiles, long drain and glass partition. Confirm quantities, tile/glass specifications and mixer supply. |
| QuickFix: tub-to-shower conversions | AED 12,000–25,000 per conversion | Provider-published band varying with size, tiles and glass. Exact inclusions, tax treatment and floor-level feasibility require a written site-specific quote. |
The AED 9,000 example becomes AED 9,450 including its stated 5% VAT, before any agreed extras. That calculation does not make it equivalent to either other example. A cheaper quote can be perfectly appropriate for a smaller scope; the missing information is what needs checking.
Compare the whole job, not just the starting price
Use the comparison tool with actual whole-project contractor totals, with measured quantities and minimum charges already applied. Add only separately priced exclusions for removal, drainage or substrate work, waterproofing and finishing, or glass and handover. Do not add an item again if it is already included. An unresolved allowance remains an unknown cost, not zero.
All amounts charged by one provider must use the same confirmed VAT basis; ask them to normalise mixed inclusive and exclusive lines before entering them. Customer-bought fittings use their final receipt total, including any retail VAT and delivery. Direct authority or community fees and refundable deposits remain outside the result. A booking deposit reduces the balance payable, not the total project cost. The tool fixes the project count at one and does not assess drainage or design feasibility.
Compare the same assessed conversion, not a shower fitting price against a bathroom rebuild. Enter provider-confirmed whole-job prices; this tool cannot determine whether a level-entry shower is feasible.
Open the full tub-to-shower conversion quote comparison. Unknown costs stay unresolved; no complete quote comparison appears until both quotes have the same confirmed scope. This tool uses your prices, not an automatic market estimate.
Illustrative arithmetic only: AED 9,000 agreed conversion package plus AED 1,000 separately priced drainage work equals AED 10,000 before VAT, or AED 10,500 when both exclude 5%. This is arithmetic, not an additional provider advertisement.
The FTA standard VAT rate is 5%; apply it only to provider-confirmed VAT-exclusive taxable amounts.
Can your bathtub footprint become a step-free shower?
Ask the contractor to show the proposed finished floor level, drain location, entrance and glass position on a simple marked-up plan. A photograph cannot establish the depth available below the tiles. A promise of a perfectly flush floor before checking the existing construction should therefore be treated as provisional.
Shower-system manufacturer Schlüter explains that floor-level showers require coordinated drainage, floor falls and waterproofing. The connection to the existing waste pipe is part of the design, not something solved by selecting a slim drain cover. Its guidance is a technical reference, not permission to alter a Dubai building's structure. See Schlüter's walk-in shower planning guidance.
| Design route | What to establish before ordering | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Low-profile shower tray | Tray size, support, waste connection and actual entrance height | A defined shower base, but not necessarily a step-free entrance |
| Tiled shower with a threshold | Threshold dimensions, drainage falls and waterproofing continuity | Can preserve more existing floor construction; users still step over a raised edge |
| Flush-entry tiled shower | Available floor build-up, approved structural constraints and protection beyond the opening | Needs a coordinated design; may affect more of the bathroom than the former tub area |
Do not authorise slab cutting, pipe rerouting or waterproofing as a DIY task. If there is active leakage, dampness below the bathroom or an uncertain structural proposal, have the relevant professional investigate before cosmetic work begins.
Specify the work that disappears beneath the tiles
A useful conversion quote identifies each of these responsibilities:
- Removal and making good: protection, tub disposal, the exact tile-removal boundary and what happens if matching tiles are unavailable.
- Drainage and water supplies: the retained and replaced components, the proposed drain, shower flow requirements and access for maintenance.
- Waterproofing: the named system, surfaces covered, junctions and penetrations, and a recorded test before it is concealed.
- Finishes: tile model or monetary allowance, trims, grout, sealant, mixer and shower fittings, plus who buys each item.
- Glass: layout, opening size, safety-glass specification, hardware and the party responsible for measurements after the finished surfaces are ready.
Tiles and grout are not themselves a waterproofing system. A flush opening also changes where splashes can travel, so the contractor must define the protected area rather than simply coating the old tub footprint. Schluter's shower-system guidance explains why the waterproof layer matters beneath the finish.
For a separate existing leak, start with our bathroom waterproofing guide. If the wet area is already sound and you only need a new enclosure, use the shower glass cost and specification guide. Neither is a substitute for a complete conversion brief.
Dubai access, approvals and a realistic handover date
Before paying a deposit, ask your building or community management what approval, contractor documents, work hours, waste route and lift protection apply. Tenants should also establish the owner's written permission. For example, the Emaar South community rules, section 18, require prior written approval for improvements outside the stated exceptions. Those are community-specific rules, not a universal Dubai permit list.
Separate the schedule into approval and procurement, site work, curing/testing, glass fitting and final handover. A provider's advertised number of working days does not necessarily include the whole elapsed period. Ask for the earliest permitted shower-use date for the actual waterproofing, adhesive, grout and sealants selected. If this is your only bathroom, settle the practical arrangements before removal starts.
At handover, ask the contractor to demonstrate water containment and drainage under the intended shower settings. Check the glass operation, access to the waste, sealed junctions and any snagging items together. Keep the test record, product details, completion photographs and written workmanship terms; do not assume a long headline warranty covers every component.

What to send for comparable conversion quotes
Send the same brief to each provider: apartment or villa, rough tub dimensions, one wide bathroom view, current mixer and drain positions, the desired entrance type, what stays, and whether the room will be occupied during work. State whether you want a complete supply-and-install job or will provide selected fittings.
Photo privacy: crop or blur names, addresses, phone and unit numbers, delivery labels, barcodes, serial labels and unrelated faces. Put access instructions and contact details in private booking fields, not in the photographs.
Request a coordinated bathroom-renovation quote for the conversion. Use a separate waterproofing or shower-glass request only when you genuinely need that independent scope, and agree who owns the interface if using more than one contractor. If you are also moving the toilet, replacing the vanity and rebuilding most finishes, our full bathroom renovation guide is the better starting point.
Frequently asked questions
Is removing the bathtub cheaper than renovating the whole bathroom?
It can be a smaller scope when the surrounding finishes, fixtures and layout stay. However, extending the waterproofed area, changing drains or replacing unmatched tiles can broaden the job. Compare an itemised conversion with a full renovation rather than assuming a fixed saving.
Does a walk-in shower have to be completely level with the bathroom floor?
No. “Walk-in” describes access and layout; it does not prove a zero-height threshold. Ask for the proposed entrance height. Genuine step-free access also needs adequate clearances and an appropriate layout, not just the removal of the bath.
Can the existing bath drain be reused?
Possibly, but the contractor must assess its position, condition, connection and suitability for the chosen shower. Reusing the visible drain location is not proof that no drainage work is needed.
Can I keep all the bathroom tiles outside the bathtub area?
Sometimes. First establish the waterproofing boundaries and how new and retained finishes meet. Ask what happens if removal damages adjacent tiles or no matching stock remains.
Should I convert the only bathtub in the home?
Decide around your household's use, bathing needs and future plans. If the bathtub is useful but only looks worn, compare bathtub refinishing or repair before removing it. A conversion should solve a real layout or access problem.
Sources and price-check method
Reviewed 14 October 2026. The three linked Dubai provider listings supply separate advertised price examples; no average was calculated across them. Manufacturer guidance supports the drainage and waterproofing discussion, and Emaar South provides a scoped community-approval example. Actual suitability, approval requirements, taxes, quantities and completion dates must be confirmed for your property in writing.
