A GCSE or IGCSE maths tutor in Dubai should match the exam board, syllabus code, tier and examination year before recommending lessons. Cambridge Core/Extended and Pearson or AQA Foundation/Higher are not interchangeable labels. Calculator rules also differ. The right first step is a focused review of the student's actual working, followed by a plan for the gaps that affect their course.

This is a maths-specific guide for choosing home tuition, not a second general GCSE overview. Use our GCSE and IGCSE tutoring guide if you are organising support across several subjects.

Identify the qualification before comparing tutors

Ask the school for the exact specification and entry route. “Year 11 maths” or “Edexcel” alone leaves important details unresolved. The table below illustrates why: it is not an exhaustive list of qualifications taught in Dubai.

Qualification exampleRoute to confirmImplication for lessons
Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580, 2025–2027 syllabusCore or Extended; A*–G gradingEach route has a non-calculator paper and a calculator paper. Practise both conditions.
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A, linear 4MA1Foundation or Higher; 9–1 gradingTwo papers at the chosen tier; a permitted calculator can be used in both.
AQA GCSE Mathematics 8300Foundation or Higher; 9–1 gradingThree papers at the same tier: one non-calculator and two calculator papers.

These distinctions come from the Cambridge 0580 syllabus, Pearson 4MA1 specification and AQA 8300 assessment overview. Pearson also offers a modular International GCSE route: ask whether the student's course is linear or modular instead of applying the 4MA1 row to every Pearson entry.

Cambridge 0580 introduced its dedicated non-calculator papers from 2025. An old all-calculator revision routine is therefore not sufficient for that current syllabus. Students preparing for 2028 or later should check the appropriate syllabus for their assessment year.

Foundation, Higher, Core or Extended: who decides?

The tier affects content and the grades available. For Cambridge 0580 in 2025–2027, Core candidates are eligible for C–G and Extended candidates for A*–E. Do not translate those directly into Foundation/Higher labels or assume that every Cambridge maths qualification uses the same grading scale.

A tutor can identify gaps and discuss readiness, but the school or examination centre must confirm the student's entry. Avoid a last-minute switch based solely on a tutor's sales promise. Ask what evidence supports the recommendation, how much additional content is involved, and whether it fits the school timetable and future course requirements.

A useful first lesson: find the error, not just the mark

One low mock result can hide several different needs. Ask the tutor to review a small, permitted sample of the student's work and watch them attempt a new question. The aim is to decide what to teach next, not to attach a fixed ability label.

What you noticeWhat to ask the tutor to check
The student follows an example but cannot start aloneWhether the underlying concept is understood; use a different question without copying the model
An advanced question fails because of algebra or fractionsWhich prerequisite needs repair before more difficult paper practice
Answers look reasonable but marks are lostWorking, notation, rounding, units and whether the response answers the actual question
Homework is strong but timed work is incompleteA manageable timed section, reading strategy and independent fluency—not an automatic increase in lesson hours

Agree a short review cycle. The tutor should name the priority skill, set a manageable independent task and revisit it later without the same prompts. A record of which errors recur is more useful than repeatedly working through whole papers without diagnosis.

Calculator practice must match the paper

Bring the calculator model approved by the school and current examination rules. The student should operate it themselves and explain what the result means. A correct number is not a substitute for the required working, and calculator practice should not displace non-calculator fluency where that is assessed.

Do not buy a new device simply because the tutor prefers it. Confirm eligibility, required functions and school recommendations first. If Additional Mathematics or Further Pure Mathematics is also being studied, name that separate qualification in the request: it should not silently appear inside a standard GCSE maths package.

What to compare in a Dubai home-tuition quote

Dubai providers advertise home tuition for these qualifications, but your subject, tier, location and recurring time still need confirmation. Ask for the named tutor's recent experience with the exact specification. A general maths degree does not by itself demonstrate familiarity with the student's papers.

For broad format and price context, use the Dubai private tutoring cost guide. Do not turn its general ranges into a guaranteed price for a specialist or copy a centre-based group rate into a home-visit budget.

Home tutoring budget guide

Choose lessons per week, lesson length and a 4- or 8-week planning period in the home tutoring budget guide. The published hourly references are AED 200–375: one 60-minute lesson each week for 4 weeks gives a lesson-fee planning range of AED 800–1,500.

Planning reference from published one-to-one lesson fees, not a quote or a Dubai-wide average. Confirm your subject, tutor, travel, VAT and package terms before booking. Different VAT/travel inclusions mean this is not a final all-inclusive comparison. Assessment, extra materials and exam entry fees excluded. Source details are in the calculator’s expandable methodology.

  • Time: session length, frequency, minimum booking and total live teaching hours.
  • Teaching scope: foundation gaps, current school topics, revision or a defined combination.
  • Feedback: whether marking practice between sessions is included and how it is returned.
  • Visit costs: coverage of your community, travel, parking and any minimum visit charge.
  • Commitment: total payable in AED, VAT if applicable, expiry and cancellation, replacement or unused-session terms.

Compare like-for-like offers before selecting a package. The least expensive live hour may not include the marking you need; a large prepaid block may be unsuitable before the teaching fit is clear. No package can guarantee a particular examination grade.

Prepare the home visit and protect the student's information

Send the year group, board/code, confirmed tier, exam year, recent topic difficulties and available time windows. Share only permitted work samples with names, candidate numbers, school identifiers and other personal details removed. Do not send school passwords or restricted papers.

For a minor, arrange a shared study space and a responsible adult's availability. Confirm the tutor's identity, relevant experience and permission to offer paid lessons. Agree visitor entry and parking privately; after-school traffic and building access need a practical arrival plan. Check how holidays or school events affect recurring lessons and package expiry.

Use Math Tutoring in Dubai and state the full qualification in the brief. When several subjects need support, compare whether separate specialists or a coordinated plan would suit the actual needs, rather than assuming one tutor can teach everything equally well.

Frequently asked questions

Is GCSE maths the same as IGCSE maths?

No. There is substantial subject overlap, but boards and qualifications differ in content, grading and assessment. Match the specification code and year before choosing resources or a tutor.

Are all IGCSE maths papers calculator papers?

No. Cambridge 0580 has dedicated non-calculator papers under its 2025–2027 syllabus. Pearson's linear Mathematics A 4MA1 permits an approved calculator in both papers. Check the student's own course.

Can a tutor move my child to Higher or Extended?

A tutor can provide evidence and discuss readiness, but the entry route must be agreed with the school or examination centre. A tier change should reflect the course demands and student needs, not a guaranteed-grade offer.

Should tuition start with a full mock paper?

Not necessarily. Existing permitted work plus a short diagnostic can reveal the priority gaps without using an entire first lesson on a paper. The tutor should explain why the chosen assessment will help planning.

Does this cover Additional or Further Pure Mathematics?

Not automatically. Those are distinct qualifications. Include their exact names and codes when requesting support, and confirm that the tutor's experience and quote cover them.
