For ordinary upkeep, mobile car washing may be sufficient. For deeper cabin work, choose the car detailing service and describe the actual problem. A “full detail” should still have an itemised scope; it is not a standard specification shared by every provider.
Extraction and steam are methods, not guarantees
Ask what will be dry-vacuumed, damp-cleaned, extracted or treated locally. More water, steam or stronger chemicals are not automatically better. The appropriate method depends on the vehicle's materials and care instructions, including synthetic upholstery, leather finishes, headliners, screens and sensitive trim.
Tesla's Model S cleaning guidance, for example, cautions against over-wetting carpets and allowing liquids into airbag covers or seat-belt mechanisms, and sets material-specific limits for cleaners. That is a reminder to use your own model's instructions, not to assume that one detailing package is appropriate for every interior.
Ask the provider to assess delicate or damaged surfaces before treatment and explain any limitation on stain removal. Dye transfer, worn coatings, burns and physical damage are not ordinary dirt. Do not approve seat removal, electrical disconnection or child-restraint cleaning as an unmentioned extra; those tasks need separate suitability checks and the relevant manufacturer's instructions.
Allow for drying, not only the appointment duration
A quoted two-hour service window is not proof that every extracted surface will be dry and ready to use after two hours. Ask which areas will become damp, how the team will remove moisture, what conditions are needed afterwards and when passengers can use the vehicle. Plan the appointment around your next essential journey.
Provide a suitable, permitted parking space with room to open doors and work without obstructing other vehicles. Confirm shade, ventilation, equipment access, electricity and wastewater arrangements. For a basement, the provider must confirm suitability rather than assuming an ordinary parking bay works for every method. Do not accept an aftercare plan that depends on leaving an unsecured car open or idling in an enclosed space.
If carpets are wet because of a leak, flooding or another unresolved moisture source, cleaning alone may not address the cause. Describe the history before booking. Persistent dampness or a returning smell requires assessment of the underlying issue; fragrance is not evidence that it has been fixed.
What to send before the visit
- Make, model, year, seating rows and whether the boot or folded third-row area needs attention.
- Photographs in natural light of the cabin, problem areas and existing damage.
