How the hardness load is calculated
Daily softened litres × measured hardness in mg/L as CaCO3 ÷ 1,000 gives grams of hardness per day. Multiply by the chosen interval and (1 + reserve percentage ÷ 100) for the preliminary working exchange load. One gpg is 17.1 mg/L; one gram is about 15.432 grains. At 800 L/day, 100 mg/L, seven days and 20% reserve, the result is 672 g CaCO3, or about 10,371 grains.
These are planning assumptions, not instructions to program a valve. Actual equipment selection must also meet peak simultaneous flow, pressure-drop and regeneration requirements. A model's efficient working capacity can be much lower than its advertised maximum; the Aquaphor S550 manual, for example, publishes different capacities for different salt settings.
Do all Dubai homes need a softener?
No. DEWA's 2025 sustainability report lists a JAPS hardness specification of 40–120 mg/L. Its typical-value footnote refers to 2023 data, not a measurement at your home today. Test the proposed inlet and identify the actual problem. A sediment/carbon filter, drinking-water RO unit and ion-exchange softener perform different jobs; NSF explains the separate treatment claims.
The low-hardness note uses the USGS descriptive soft-water category of 0–60 mg/L. It is not a drinking-water safety assessment. The design-load formula assumes near-zero outlet hardness; an agreed residual hardness or blending arrangement needs a supplier's calculation.
Ownership costs: what is and is not included
Salt cost is your entered monthly consumption × 12 ÷ bag weight × price per bag. It is not inferred from resin volume. The 1, 3 and 5-year totals add capital once, then the recurring items for each year. Installation-included and salt-included options prevent duplicate charges; included first-year service is deducted only once. All prices must share the selected VAT basis.
A blank price means unknown, not free. Totals remain incomplete until the known-scope inputs are supplied. Future price increases, financing and unforeseen repairs/resin replacement are excluded unless you add an allowance. Annual salt consumption-equivalent cost differs from buying whole bags with leftover stock.
Current price references are different scopes
ACE UAE lists the S550 at AED 2,500 for hardware. AquaPro publishes AED 4,800 and 5,400 softener/filter packages. Future Life quotes a broad AED 3,000–8,000 system-and-installation range. These checked offers are not a market average or interchangeable recommendations. Obtain a model-specific written quotation, including VAT and any pipework.
What to ask before installation
- Inlet hardness result, exact technology and model, working capacity at its salt dose, and required outlet quality.
- Peak flow and pressure-drop check, position relative to the tank/pump, and an accessible bypass.
- A sheltered location within the model's temperature limits, safe power and enough space to refill salt and service the valve.
- A compliant regeneration drain and separate gravity overflow, with the required air gap and backflow protection.
- Commissioning hardness test, annual service and salt scope, spare-parts availability, warranty and all exclusions.
