Automatic gate installation in Dubai can mean a completely new driveway entrance or adding a motor to an existing manual gate. Those are not interchangeable quotes. A new system may need fabrication, posts, foundations and electrical work; a retrofit first needs proof that the existing gate, supports and movement are suitable for automation.
Quick answer: buy an assessed system, not a motor box
- Ask whether the proposal includes the gate itself, automation only, or replacement of a failed motor.
- Choose swing or sliding movement around the actual driveway, parked vehicles and pedestrian route.
- Keep safety assessment, installation, testing and handover inside the written scope.
- Resolve power-loss access and ongoing maintenance before choosing app features or extra remotes.
This guide does not publish a generic AED installation band. A motor kit cannot establish the price of a fabricated gate with civil works, and public offers do not provide a consistent complete scope. Request measured project quotations with VAT, call-out or survey charges and exclusions stated. For the relevant service route, see electric gate installation in Dubai.
Which job are you actually commissioning?
| Job | What the assessment must establish | What must not be assumed |
|---|---|---|
| New gate and automation | Opening, leaf design, posts/supports, movement, power and safeguarding | That the motor supplier also fabricates the gate or builds foundations |
| Motorise an existing manual gate | Condition, alignment, hinges or track, supports and safe travel | That a freely moving gate is automatically safe to motorise |
| Replace an existing motor | Cause of failure and compatibility with the complete retained system | That an identical-looking motor resolves worn mechanics or missing safeguards |
| Access-control upgrade | Compatibility of intercom, remotes, controls and intended users | That adding phone control upgrades the underlying gate’s safety |
CAME explicitly distinguishes its automation products from the gate or door itself in its gate-automation overview. Use the same distinction in your brief: identify who supplies the leaf, who accepts the existing structure, and who takes responsibility for the completed installation. A price headed “automatic gate” is not enough detail.
Swing or sliding: let the site decide
A swing leaf needs a clear sweep and compatible hinge/post geometry. Show the installer where vehicles stop, where people walk and whether the driveway slopes. A sliding gate needs an assessed travel arrangement and sufficient run-back space beside the opening. Ask how the design manages the moving leaf beside walls, fencing and other fixed objects; the visible closing edge is not the only place that can trap someone.
Somfy’s gate-system selection guidance distinguishes swing and sliding arrangements and relates motor selection to gate characteristics. Do not select a motor from a maximum-weight headline alone. Give the installer the actual dimensions, construction, use pattern and exposure so they can verify the model and installation against its documentation.
Dubai-specific discussions should be practical: dust and sand around movement components, sun exposure at control equipment, water paths across the driveway, coastal exposure where relevant, and community access arrangements. Ask how the proposed specification addresses your site rather than accepting an unsupported “weatherproof” label. Confirm any approval needed for changes to the frontage, boundary or driveway with the relevant owner and management before fabrication.

Safety equipment is a system decision
The UK Health and Safety Executive’s powered-gate safety guidance explains why safe operation depends on how components work together at a particular site, not merely which parts appear in a kit. It identifies hazards around hinges, moving leaves and fixed structures, and discusses assessment, safeguards and testing. This is useful technical guidance; it is not presented here as Dubai law or an approval certificate.
Ask the installer to explain the assessed hazards, the safeguards for each, and the commissioning evidence supplied at handover. Photocells, safety edges and force-control features have different roles; one sensor is not proof that all trapping locations are addressed. Where force limitation is part of the safety strategy, ask what objective testing and records are included. Do not attempt a force test with your hand, body, child, pet or car.
If an existing gate behaves unpredictably, has damaged safety equipment or could fall or leave its track, keep people away and stop using it pending competent assessment. Do not bypass sensors to make it move. HSE’s basic guidance also emphasises instructions, maintenance and taking dangerous gates out of use. Ask the provider for a safe, model-specific shutdown and emergency-access procedure.
The quote should include the work outside the gate
| Package area | Confirm in writing | Decision risk if omitted |
|---|---|---|
| Fabrication and supports | Leaf specification, finish, posts, foundations and accepted retained parts | A motor quote is mistaken for a new entrance |
| Power and civil works | Supply route, isolation, trenching, cable protection, drainage and reinstatement | Paving is opened but repairs or electrical work remain unpriced |
| Safeguarding and commissioning | Assessed protections, testing, documentation and user training | A working remote is mistaken for a completed safe handover |
| Power-loss access | Manual release, access to the release, keys and any specified battery provision | The only exit depends on power or a key stored beyond the closed gate |
| Aftercare | Parts and labour terms, maintenance scope, response process and consumables | A product warranty is mistaken for an ongoing maintenance contract |
If new metalwork is substantial, the custom metal fabrication guide helps separate finish and construction details from automation. Where you are changing a wider boundary, the garden fencing guide covers the surrounding project decision. Neither replaces the gate installer’s system assessment.
Compare two complete automatic-gate quotations
Enter the same job type and service period in the tool below. For a retrofit, mark gate fabrication not needed only after reuse has been assessed. Keep unknown electrical or civil works unresolved. A maintenance allowance should cover the same period in both quotes, or be deliberately excluded from both installation totals. The tool normalises entered prices; it does not size a motor or validate safety.
Separate a complete driveway gate from a motor-only retrofit, then compare two assessed proposals for the same entrance. All prices come from your written quotes.
Open the full automatic gate installation quote comparison. Use written prices: unknown essentials remain unresolved and a comparable difference appears only after both scopes are confirmed.
What to send and what to receive
Send photographs from both sides of the entrance, approximate opening width and height, the full travel area, posts, hinges or track, nearby drainage and the available power location if known. State whether the gate is new or retained, who uses it, whether pedestrians share the vehicle route, and whether it is the home’s only access. Do not open electrical housings to obtain a photo.
Before signing, request a layout, equipment schedule, assessment and commissioning deliverables, clear exclusions, payment stages and who coordinates specialist work. At handover, receive manuals, model details, release keys, operating instructions and a maintenance schedule. Ask for a demonstration of normal use and the agreed emergency procedure without exposing anyone to the moving gate.

Frequently asked questions
Can any manual gate be automated?
No such assumption is safe. The installer must assess the leaf, supports, hinges or track, alignment, travel and safeguarding before confirming reuse or specifying alterations.
Does the motor price include the gate?
Often these are separate scopes. Ask for an explicit leaf-and-fabrication line or a statement that the existing gate is retained and assessed as suitable.
Are photocells enough?
A listed photocell does not establish complete protection. The site assessment determines the necessary safeguards and how their combined operation is tested.
What happens in a power cut?
That depends on the installed system. Confirm the manual-release procedure, who can reach it, where keys are kept and whether backup power is included. Do not assume every motor has a battery.
Can I keep my existing remotes and intercom?
Possibly, but the installer must verify compatibility with the controller and agreed operating logic. List retained equipment before the quote is finalised.
