A custom metal screen, console frame or planter can solve a very specific space problem. But metal fabrication in Dubai also covers factories, structural steel and commercial fit-out, so a broad search can lead to the wrong type of contractor. For a home, start with the item, its intended use and the complete design-to-installation scope.

Quick answer

  • This guide covers residential decorative screens, non-structural frames, bespoke furniture/shelving frames, wall features and planters.
  • Compare one approved drawing and material/finish specification. “Metal frame” is not enough to establish equivalent quotations.
  • Ask for design, fabrication, finishing, delivery and fixing to be separately identified. A coating-only rate or raw-metal price is not a finished-item price.
  • Structural building work, fire-rated assemblies, fall-protection barriers and overhead installations need a different specialist brief. Do not treat a decorative fabricator as automatically qualified for those jobs.

What residential metalwork can you commission?

Useful briefs describe the function before the pattern: a room divider that preserves daylight, a console frame sized to an existing top, or a planter that fits a narrow terrace. Tell the fabricator whether the piece will be freestanding or fixed and what it must carry.

ItemDefine before pricingImportant boundary
Decorative screen or room dividerOverall size, pattern/openings, frame, edge treatment and fixingNot automatically a safety barrier, acoustic enclosure or fire-rated partition
Furniture or shelving frameIntended loads, top/shelf material, stability, joints and floor protectionA reference photograph does not define load capacity
Planter or outdoor decorative itemFilled weight, liner/drainage plan, weather exposure and coating systemDo not assume a balcony or raised deck can carry the finished item
Non-structural frame or wall featureInterfaces with glass, joinery or wall finishes and installer responsibilityStructural or fire-rated requirements change the professional scope

Petra describes drawing-led fabrication, decorative screens and coordinated joinery elements. Morshedi lists custom outdoor screens, planter boxes and furniture frames. These are examples of available market scopes, not endorsements or evidence that either company is available through Bestimate.

If the main project is a boundary enclosure, use the garden-fencing guide. If it is a glazed room division, the glass-partition guide covers that complete system. Keep the core functional scope with the appropriate specialist instead of splitting responsibility accidentally.

How much does custom metal fabrication cost?

For residential bespoke work, compare the complete specified item or project. Price per kilogram does not capture design, laser cutting, welding, joint finishing, coating or installation. Price per square metre may describe only a panel face or one finishing operation.

A useful illustration of the distinction is Mujeeb Ahamed Metal Coating's advertised powder coating from AED 15 per sqm. This is a Sharjah provider's coating-only starting offer, not a Dubai finished-screen or fabrication price. Preparation, minimum order, collection, exact coating system and VAT are not sufficiently defined to turn it into a complete residential budget.

The reviewed Dubai fabrication pages did not establish a like-for-like installed market range. Request quotes against the same drawing instead of filling that gap with an arbitrary rate. Ask for one simpler alternative—such as a standard profile or less complex pattern—so you can see the actual saving offered for your project.

Compare complete fabrication quotations

Enter your actual whole-project quotes in the tool below. Add only confirmed excluded costs, and leave missing delivery, fixing or finishing amounts unresolved. It compares arithmetic and scope entries; it does not verify a frame's strength, a weld or an anchor design.

For illustration only, an invented AED 10,000 fabricated-item package plus AED 1,000 of excluded installation equals AED 11,000 before tax. If both amounts exclude applicable 5% VAT, the total is AED 11,550. This is not a market estimate. Do not add installation or coating again when already included in the package.

Compare the same non-structural residential item from an agreed drawing to installed handover. This tool does not convert industrial fabrication rates into a home-project estimate or certify a safety-critical metal assembly.

Open the full custom residential metalwork quote comparison. Unknown costs stay unresolved; no complete quote comparison appears until both quotes have the same confirmed scope. This tool uses your prices, not an automatic market estimate.

Specify the metal and the finish separately

Ask for the exact material grade or alloy, section dimensions and wall or sheet thickness in the quotation. Those details matter more than a general “premium metal” description. Have the fabricator explain suitability for the intended load, fixing surface and indoor or outdoor exposure.

Quoted materialQuestions that make quotes comparable
Mild steelWhich section/thickness, preparation and complete corrosion-protection system are included?
Stainless steelWhich grade and surface finish, how are joints finished, and what care is required in this location?
AluminiumWhich alloy/profile, joint design and finish suit the dimensions and intended use?
Brass or a brass-look finishIs it solid metal, plating or a coloured coating? What appearance changes and maintenance should be expected?

“Powder coated” identifies a finish process, not the entire protective specification. Jotun's steel-primer documentation distinguishes prepared substrates, a primer and compatible exterior products. Ask your fabricator for its proposed complete system and product documentation; this is not a recommendation to apply that particular product to every item.

For outdoor pieces, identify coastal exposure, irrigation splash, contact with wet soil and inaccessible surfaces. Ask how cuts, welds, joints and any site damage will be protected. Request a maintenance schedule and the actual warranty exclusions rather than accepting “rustproof” or “maintenance-free” without a specification.

Approve the drawing before the workshop starts

A useful shop drawing records overall dimensions, sections, thicknesses, visible joints, fixing points, finish and interfaces with adjacent materials. It should distinguish your approximate reference measurements from the fabricator's final site measurements. Agree who checks dimensions before manufacturing and how a change after approval is priced.

For a screen, review the pattern at realistic scale: privacy, sightlines and the size of openings may look different from a small phone image. For a furniture frame, identify the actual top or shelves and their intended loads. For a planter, define the liner, drainage and filled condition. Decorative appearance does not establish capacity.

Ask for a finish sample in the intended lighting. Record colour reference, gloss or texture, visible weld expectations and treatment of edges. A photograph of another project can guide the brief, but do not expect it to resolve every fabrication detail.

If the piece connects to cabinetry, share the same drawing with the joiner. The custom-carpentry guide helps separate the timber and metal responsibilities, including who templates and installs the finished top.

Do not leave installation as a last-minute extra

Check the route from the vehicle to the final location, not just the room dimensions. Ask whether large pieces are delivered assembled or joined on site. Where site cutting or welding is proposed, the contractor must establish the necessary controls and permissions; do not accept uncontrolled hot work in an occupied room.

For external changes or restricted community access, confirm the applicable management process. Emaar's home-modification guidance is one community-specific example, not a universal approval rule for every small furniture item.

Prepare a clear metalwork request

Send the item type and quantity, approximate dimensions, indoor/outdoor location, intended use or loads, preferred finish and photos of the installation area. Say whether you need design-and-build, fabrication from drawings, delivery only or assessment of an existing item. Crop personal documents and security details out of pictures.

Ask the responding workshop to confirm it accepts residential work of this scale, its relevant experience and availability. A service listing does not prove capability for structural, fire-rated, overhead or safety-critical work. Do not rely on a decorative-metal quote for those functions.

Frequently asked questions

Can a fabricator work from a photo or sketch?

Usually it can use one to discuss the concept, but a final quotation and manufacturing approval should define dimensions, materials, finish and fixing. A reference image is not an engineering drawing.

Is powder coating included in metal fabrication?

Only if stated. Check preparation, the complete coating system, colour/texture, finishing of joints and any touch-up after installation. A coating-only rate excludes the making of the item.

Which metal is best for an outdoor planter or screen?

There is no universal choice. Ask the fabricator to justify the material, grade, section and protective system for exposure, intended loads and care requirements. Compare that exact specification across quotes.

Can custom metalwork be installed without drilling?

Some freestanding designs may be possible, but stability and intended use still need assessment. Do not remove a fixing requirement simply to protect a floor or avoid seeking permission.

Does this service include balcony railings or structural steel?

This guide and request scope are for residential decorative and non-structural items. Fall-protection barriers, structural steel and fire-rated assemblies require the appropriate separately specified specialist work.

Sources and methodology

Reviewed on 15 October 2026 using the linked primary fabricator, coating-manufacturer and community pages. The single Sharjah coating advertisement is included only to explain price-unit boundaries, not as a Dubai fabrication benchmark. Conditional VAT arithmetic follows the Federal Tax Authority's standard-rate explanation. No raw-metal, coating or industrial-project price has been presented as a finished residential installation average.
