Quick answer

International moving from Dubai needs a shipment-specific quote, not a fixed price per bedroom. Compare the same inventory, destination postcode, shipping method and delivery scope. Packing, freight, destination handling, customs-related charges, storage and protection can sit on different invoices. Use the comparison tool below to separate confirmed costs from exclusions before choosing a mover.

A low international-moving quote is useful only if it gets the same belongings to the same place. A port-only shipment and a door-to-door relocation are different purchases, even when both advertisements say “international movers Dubai”. This guide explains what to price, what to ask and how to compare real proposals without inventing a country-by-country tariff.

It covers household goods leaving Dubai. For a move within the city, use the Dubai movers and packers guide; the overseas shipment needs additional freight and destination checks.

How much does international moving from Dubai cost?

There is no defensible single Dubai-to-overseas price that covers every destination, volume and service level. Ask for a pre-move survey and a written inventory before treating a price as bookable. Crown’s UAE planning guide identifies shipment volume, destination, transport method and customs requirements as cost drivers, and recommends a survey to assess the load.

The cost schedule to request from every international mover

Cost blockWhat the quote should identifyCommon comparison gap
Dubai origin workPacking materials, labour, dismantling, collection, lift or long-carry access and export preparationAn attractive freight figure excludes the work needed to get goods to the shipment.
International transportMode, measured volume or chargeable weight, routing, freight and named surchargesDifferent volumes, routes or quote-validity dates are compared as if identical.
Destination handlingNamed destination agent, terminal handling, clearance service and final delivery“Door-to-door” does not explain which destination charges remain payable.
Conditional costsInspection, treatment, storage, waiting, difficult access and delivery reschedulingAn unpriced possible charge is silently treated as zero.
Protection and paymentCover terms, declared values, excess, currency, payment stages and tax treatmentA headline total omits protection, currency fees or a separate invoice.

Request separate figures for unavoidable charges and conditional charges, with the trigger and calculation basis for each. A refundable building deposit is cash you may need, but it is not the same as a non-refundable moving expense. Keep it visible in your cash-flow plan rather than disguising it as an included service.

Compare the same overseas household shipment with origin, freight and destination costs visible. All entries must be confirmed AED equivalents.

Open the full international move quote comparison. Use your written prices: unknown costs remain unresolved, and comparable totals appear only after both scopes are confirmed.

Using the quote comparison: enter actual written amounts in AED. Record a full line total or the quoted unit rate and quantity; do not enter both. Mark included items as included elsewhere. Leave unpriced destination charges unresolved. If a supplier invoices in another currency, first obtain a confirmed AED conversion including payment fees. The tool does not calculate exchange rates, customs duties or shipping tariffs, and it cannot establish that a proposal is complete.

Volume, shared containers and air freight

Give every mover the same room-by-room inventory, including balcony furniture, storage cupboards, bicycles and items you plan to sell. Ask whether the survey volume includes export wrapping and crates, how final volume is measured, and when an adjustment needs your written approval. “Two bedrooms” describes the home, not the amount that will travel.

For sea freight, request both a shared-load and a dedicated-container option when the surveyor considers both suitable. Crown describes shared container shipping as combining customers’ shipments so each pays for the space used. That can suit a smaller load with flexible timing; it is not an automatic saving once destination handling and delivery are added.

Ask whether the shared service has a planned departure or waits for consolidation, what happens if it is delayed, and who communicates progress. For a dedicated container, confirm that exclusive use is actually included. Do not book a container size solely from a bedroom-count chart.

If essentials are travelling by air, request the carrier’s chargeable-weight calculation and all collection, handling and delivery costs. A quotation for air cargo is not the same as an airline’s passenger baggage allowance. Compare the total for the items that must arrive early, not a per-kilogram headline against a sea-freight cubic-metre price.

Destination rules can change the bill

Ask the destination agent for a checklist specific to your residency status, household goods and arrival date. Confirm which documents must be accepted before packing or dispatch, and send sensitive documents only through an agreed secure channel. Customs clearance assistance does not mean taxes or inspections are included.

Two destination examples: verify the rules for your own move

DestinationOfficial point to checkPractical quote question
United KingdomTransfer-of-residence relief is conditional; it is not automatic because belongings are used.Who checks eligibility and approval, and what happens to the quote if relief is unavailable?
AustraliaHousehold goods are subject to biosecurity assessment. Items associated with soil, plants or animals need particular attention.Who prepares the packing list, and who pays if inspection, cleaning or treatment is required?

For the UK, use HMRC’s transfer-of-residence guidance before assuming relief applies. For Australia, follow the Department of Agriculture’s personal-effects guidance, including checking import conditions and cleaning and drying relevant belongings. These are examples, not a substitute for the current rules at your destination.

Ask the mover for its written restricted-items list before packing. Flag batteries, aerosols, liquids, food, plants and unusual collections for a specific acceptance decision rather than hiding them in “miscellaneous” cartons. Pets and vehicles need their own arrangements; do not assume they are part of a household-goods quote.

Protection, delivery and dates: read the conditions

Obtain the actual protection or insurance wording, not just “fully insured” in a message. Ask who provides cover, the valuation basis, any excess, exclusions, owner-packed restrictions and the deadline and evidence required for a claim. Photograph valuable items and their condition before packing, and reconcile the numbered inventory at collection and delivery.

Keep the planned packing date, departure date, port arrival and home-delivery window separate. A sailing duration is not a door-to-door promise. Ask how rerouting, customs delays and storage are handled and whether any date is guaranteed in writing. Crown’s 2026 shipping update is a reminder to confirm current routing and booking conditions instead of reusing an old transit estimate.

Coordinate the Dubai service lift and move-out permit with your building; keep a buffer between collection and the final handover. The tenant handover checklist covers cleaning, property condition and records separately from the shipping contract. Local seasonal planning in our best time to move guide also does not predict international freight prices.

A complete quote can beat the lowest headline

Here is illustrative arithmetic, not market pricing: Quote A lists AED 10,000 for origin work and transport, plus AED 2,000 confirmed destination delivery and AED 500 protection. Its known total is AED 12,500 if these are final payable amounts. Quote B lists AED 11,800 “door-to-door” but leaves destination handling unpriced. B cannot yet be called cheaper. Resolve the missing scope before comparing, and do not apply one VAT rate to the entire international shipment by default.

Send this brief to each mover:

  • Dubai collection address and destination postcode, property floors, lifts, parking and access restrictions.
  • The same dated inventory and photos, with items to ship, store or leave behind clearly separated.
  • Surveyed volume, transport option, packing responsibility and any special crating.
  • Named destination agent, delivery/unpacking scope and the complete exclusions schedule.
  • Required dates, quote expiry, payment stages, cancellation terms, protection and tax treatment.

Before paying, confirm the contracting company, the recipient account and who is responsible if a subcontractor changes. Keep the accepted scope, inventory, invoices and correspondence together. A clear written handover is more useful than an unsupported promise of the “cheapest international moving company”.

Frequently asked questions

Is sea freight always cheaper than air freight?

Not for every small shipment or deadline. Ask for complete quotes for the same inventory. Handling minimums, destination delivery and the cost of waiting can matter as much as the transport line.

Can I get an accurate quote without a home visit?

A detailed video survey may be offered, but the quote still needs an agreed inventory and measurement basis. Ask what can change after packing and how any increase is approved.

Does door-to-door include customs duty?

Do not assume it does. Require separate confirmation of clearance services, government duties or taxes, inspections, treatment and delivery. Eligibility for relief depends on the destination’s rules and your circumstances.

Can I pack everything myself to save money?

Ask first. The mover may need to verify contents and packaging, and protection terms may treat owner-packed goods differently. Compare a documented self-pack option with professional packing, not an assumed discount.

How can I reduce the cost without cutting important protection?

Request revised quotes after removing items you genuinely do not need overseas, compare suitable shipping options and avoid duplicate services. Keep clear inventory, access and delivery requirements; removing an essential line from the quote does not remove the expense.
