A warning light, intermittent starting problem or unusual behaviour is a reason to describe the symptom accurately. It is not a reason to choose a replacement sensor from an online code list. This guide concerns a car you already own and an unresolved fault; a buyer's whole-vehicle assessment belongs in the pre-purchase inspection guide.
What are you actually paying to diagnose?
Battmobile advertises mobile computer diagnostics, but the same page also describes service-centre and towing options. Max Garage lists mobile scanning and starting/charging-system checks, with workshop escalation where needed. Neither reviewed page establishes a universal fixed price for a completed root-cause investigation. Obtain a written fee for your vehicle and symptoms rather than treating a generic scan offer as a repair quote.
A scan, a diagnosis and a repair are separate scopes
| Service level | Useful output | Not automatically included |
|---|---|---|
| Code scan | Recorded codes and which systems were accessible. | Proof of the failed component, physical tests or a repair. |
| Fault assessment | Symptoms considered alongside relevant data and agreed checks. | Unlimited investigation, every system or specialist workshop equipment. |
| Additional investigation | A defined next test, reason, cost and location. | Permission to dismantle or replace parts without approval. |
| Approved repair and verification | The agreed work, checks completed and unresolved limitations. | A guarantee that all intermittent or unrelated faults have disappeared. |
Compare two diagnostic-visit quotes
Compare Diagnosis, Additional tests and Visit charge for the same assessment. Enter actual written amounts and confirm whether each includes VAT. Additional tests that have not been scoped or priced remain unresolved, not free. A bundled scan should not appear again as an extra line.
For arithmetic only, an agreed assessment of AED 250 plus an approved AED 100 test and AED 50 visit charge totals AED 400 when all three amounts are final and tax-inclusive. These are illustrative inputs, not observed Dubai prices. This comparison does not calculate the eventual repair bill or verify diagnostic competence.
Open the full quote comparison calculator. This tool uses your written quotes, not a market-price estimate. Enter two written quotes for the same scope. Unknown costs stay incomplete; confirm VAT, exclusions and booking terms before comparing.
Why a fault code is not a parts order
I-CAR's diagnostic guidance explains that trouble codes inform the diagnostic process rather than identify a part to replace. The original context is collision-related electronic systems; the important distinction here is between a recorded fault and a confirmed repair decision. Ask the technician what evidence supports the proposed next step.
Bosch describes professional diagnostic tools that combine codes with live values, tests and vehicle-specific information. That does not mean every visiting technician has every function for your model. Give the exact vehicle details beforehand and ask about system access, manufacturer-specific capability and any operation that must happen elsewhere.
Do not request a warning-light reset as the entire job. Ask for the original findings to be preserved before any agreed reset and for an explanation of what was repaired, tested or left unresolved. A dashboard that temporarily looks normal is not equivalent to a documented repair.

Send observations that make the first visit useful
A better symptom brief
| Send | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Make, model, year, engine/powertrain and mileage | Helps the provider confirm vehicle coverage before travelling. |
| Exact dashboard message or a safely taken photo | Avoids confusing a service reminder with another warning. |
| When the symptom occurs | Cold start, after parking, intermittently or under a particular condition—describe it without deliberately recreating unsafe behaviour. |
| Recent repairs, battery work, jump-starts or water exposure | Relevant history can change the assessment; disclose it rather than choosing a diagnosis. |
| Parking and access details | Lets the provider decide what testing is safe and feasible onsite. |
If you already have a previous scan or repair invoice, send the unedited findings through the provider's appropriate channel and explain what has changed. Avoid clearing information or disconnecting components merely to see whether the warning returns. Do not record video while driving.
Know the mobile visit's stopping point
Some assessments can progress in authorised home parking; others need controlled testing, component access, specialist equipment or a workshop. Ask for a defined approval point before additional paid investigation. If the problem cannot be reproduced, the useful result is a record of what was checked, what was not demonstrated and the proposed next step—not a claim that no fault exists.
Running-engine tests require a suitable location. The CDC warns against running a car in a garage attached to a home, even with the door open. Building permission, ventilation and safe test access must be resolved by the provider; “basement parking available” does not settle them.
Do not continue driving to prove a fault when braking or steering is affected, the vehicle is overheating, there is smoke or a strong fuel smell, or the manufacturer's warning instructs you to stop. Seek appropriate professional or emergency assistance. Diagnosis of a hybrid or EV does not imply authorisation or equipment for high-voltage work.
What should the report and invoice contain?
Request the vehicle identity, symptoms, accessible systems, relevant findings, tests completed, limitations and next recommendation. Separate a confirmed defect from a possible cause. The invoice should identify the assessment and any approved extra tests, with tax, visit charges and agreed credits clearly shown.
If a later repair attracts a diagnostic-fee credit, obtain the final payable breakdown from the provider. Do not subtract it yourself from a quote that may already include the credit. The car diagnostics service is the relevant enquiry route for this assessment. For a clearly cooling-related problem, the mobile car AC guide explains its separate scope; the battery guide covers testing and fitment rather than every no-start fault.

Frequently asked questions
Is a diagnostic scan the same as finding the root cause?
No. A scan supplies information. The technician may need additional observations and tests before recommending a repair.
Does no fault code mean the car has no problem?
It does not prove that. The report should state what was tested and the limits of the result, especially for intermittent symptoms or systems the tool could not access.
Can the provider fix the car during the diagnostic visit?
Sometimes, after assessment and approval. Parts, specialist equipment or site restrictions may require another appointment or a workshop. Ask whether repair labour is separate.
Should I pay for a scan before buying a used car?
A scan may be one part of a buyer's inspection, but it does not replace the wider mechanical, body, access and history considerations of a pre-purchase assessment.
Is the cheapest diagnostic quote the best value?
Only compare equivalent scope. A code printout and a defined diagnostic investigation are different purchases, even when both are called a computer check.
